Mobility: a city where getting around is a pleasure
When Verity arrives in the Geneva of 2061, one of the first things she notices is how quiet everything is: people get around mostly on foot or by bicycle, the few vehicles are silent delivery vans, and the only cars are self-driving rental cars parked on the outskirts for longer trips. A metro has replaced the tram rails. The ideas below describe how Geneva can get there: shorter distances, better networks, and far fewer cars.
- A city made for walking and cycling Done somewhere Almost half of all trips in Geneva are already made on foot or by bicycle. In 2061, everything people need is within a short walk or ride, on streets where walkers and cyclists each have their own safe space. MOB-01
- Almost no private cars Engineering and scale Very few people own a car in 2061. Shared cars parked at the edge of town are there for longer trips, and the space once taken by parked cars is given back to trees, cycle lanes, café terraces and playgrounds. MOB-02
- A metro for the whole region Engineering and scale An underground network serves the city and the whole cross-border region, building on the Léman Express, so that trams can gradually give way where they cause the most problems. MOB-03
- Fewer and faster roadworks Done somewhere Utility tunnels under the streets let pipes and cables be repaired without digging up the road, and the few roadworks that remain are well coordinated and finished quickly. MOB-04
- Quiet, clean deliveries Done somewhere Silent electric vans, cargo bikes, parcel lockers and delivery hubs bring goods to shops and homes without noise or fumes, and buying locally means far fewer goods need to travel far at all. MOB-05
- Short commutes Political will Most people live close to where they work, so long daily commutes, including for the many cross-border commuters, become the exception. No door-to-door commute takes more than 30 minutes. MOB-06
- A city that is easy to find your way around Done somewhere Landmarks, clear signs, logical layouts and transport lines named by direction or destination make Geneva easy to find your way around, for residents and visitors alike, and campuses and large buildings are no longer mazes. MOB-07
- Travelling far, comfortably Done somewhere Night trains and comfortable long-distance trains replace most short-haul flights, making the journey itself part of the pleasure. MOB-08 · page in preparation
